In the Windows computer world, there are programs that allow you to compress, or zip files before sending them to your friends and associates. This compacts files into a tighter size prior to sending them across slow dialup or network connections. The problem that often arises, is that the person receiving the "zip" file doesn't have the software to "unzip" it. Then what?
There are shareware utilities out on the Internet that allow you to compress (create zip) files, and decompress (unzip) files someone has sent you. They used to be difficult command lines, but now have been given a graphical display with folder views and associated help files.
I recently got a call from a Macintosh user who received a zip archive from a PC user and reported that Alladin's Stuffit Expander wouldn't open it up. As it turns out, Stuffit Expander 6.5.1 will decompress Windows "zip" files. If you need to download a Zip/Unzip utility for your PC, the shareware program "Winzip" is well thought of, easy to use, and full of help for beginners. There are others, and you can make a Saturday afternoon researching your alternatives if you like.
As I mentioned, if you are a Macintosh user, Stuffit Expander has always been viewed as the standard "Unzip" (although Mac users don't usually refer to it as "zipping") utility.

Once installed, you should familiarize yourself a little with the unarchiving process before someone sends you an attachment you really need with no idea what to do with it.
