Optimize your hard drive using Defragmenter

Once you have tested your hard drive using Scandisk and there were no errors, you can continue improving your systems’ performance by running another utility built into Windows called Disk Defragmenter.

Over time, you have enlarged the size of files and this can result in those files becoming broken up and the fragments stored in different locations on the hard drive.  When you try to open the file, your computer has to figure out where all the pieces are and reassemble them in order before displaying the whole file to you.  This is a lot of extra work.  Running the defragmenting utility can noticeably increase your computers’ performance.

Location of Disk Defragmenter

The most sure fire way of launching Disk Defragmenter is by hitting your start button, selecting “Programs”, then “Accessories”, then “System Tools”, and then clicking on Disk Defragmenter.  This should work on all versions of Windows from 95 to XP.  There is an exception.  Microsoft didn’t include a defragmenting utility with Windows NT.  Most people aren’t running that, but you can install a 3rd party utility called Diskeeper Lite if you are running NT.

Please note - if you are dealing with potentially lost data...

If you are dealing with potentially corrupted databases...

If you don't feel comfortable running this utility on your own...
